Wedge pillows to elevate your feet

By using pillows to elevate your feet with a wedge pillow, you can improve circulation in legs and feet. It can help relieve swollen feet and ankles, lower back pain, knee pain, sciatica, and more. Anyone no matter your age or heath condition, can use this technique for relief, unless discouraged by your doctor, of course.  The medical wedge pillows for legs may relieve discomfort and pressure in the knees, hips and lower back. Elevation pillows also promote increased circulation to relieve swollen, aching and tired feet.

A simple solution

It is such a simple technique and it can be very tempting to just throw your legs up on the back of a couch, which I have done many times. I have also tried stacking pillows at the foot of my bed. They stayed that way for about 2 minutes. Any method other than using a wedge pillow  to elevate feet and legs properly above your heart will really not be of much value, and actually can cause pressure on other parts of your legs, and that would defeat the elevation purpose. I have learned from years of experience the right way  and yes, the wrong.

The proper solution

You need a foam wedge pillow that will fit the shape of the leg and that has been designed for the purpose of correctly elevating your legs to the proper height, without putting pressure on any other part of the body.

What needs to be accomplished here is elevating your legs above the heart, while your feet and calves are above your hips. This allows fluids to drain. Note: Feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem and you should see your physician.

What you don’t want to do

You should not elevate the legs by keeping the legs totally straight and up in the air.  Putting your feet against the wall is one way of doing this. This can cause a lot of stress and strain on the muscles and tendons of the knees causing you more pain. Besides, bending the knees slightly is more comfortable.

You should always make sure that your spine is straight. You don’t want to twist your upper body in any way. Lying flat or with a regular pillow under your head is perfect. You also have to make sure that you lie down somewhere that will allow you to extend your entire body while using the wedge pillow for elevating your legs.

If you sprain your ankle

To treat a sprained ankle, or any other injury that causes instant swelling, you will want to apply ice, some compression and then elevate the injured foot and leg. Using a wedge pillow designed for this is the best way to go.

Make it a routine

You should make elevating your legs a part of your everyday routine, say each evening, especially if you have chronic circulation problems  This long term habit can come to do you some long term good. If you suffer from feet and ankle swelling, try lying down twice a day with your legs elevated using your wedge pillow.  Relax and enjoy the time alone.  Below is the Xtra-Comfort Leg Elevation Pillow.    This wedge pillow is my second choice.  It is  also memory  foam and has a removable cover that is washable.  Click the image to buy or to see online.

  1. W😲W! WEDGE PILLOWS?

I never imagined that there would be a pillow made specially for our legs just like we have pillows for our heads. And amazingly, it is not just a pillow but one that can help with a lot of problems and health challenges the human legs can face. It’s indeed a great discovery and invention.

Just a quick question; even as the wedge pillow helps to relieve us in some ways, are there no negative side effects of using it?

    Thank you!

    1. As far as I know from my research, there are no ill side effects from using a wedge pillow.  They say if you don’t like, just don’t use it.  Thanks for taking time to check it out.

  2. Hi Sharen. Thank you for sharing this post about wedge pillows we can use to elevate our feet. I am not familiar with wedge pillows so I am happy I am learning about it today and from this blog. Good to know all the positive impacts and functionality of the wedge pillows to the human body.

Can wedge pillows help with waist pain? I’m feeling some pains in my waist after some hard job done!

    1. It can’t hurt.  Perhaps if you treat it like a sprained ankle and put some ice on it and wrap an ace bandage or something for compression, it might help the inflammation.  Thank you for your time

  3. I’m going to get one of those! I stand on my feet all day as a waitress and always have swollen feet by the time I get home. I try to use pillows and towels to prop up my feet but you are spot on it just fails after a few minutes of trying to sleep that way. The wedge pillow seems like such a great idea for a pillow. I’m sure they have been around for years (I’m guessing) but this is the first time I have heard of them, thx!

    1. I think it could make a big difference for you by relieving the swelling and helping with circulation.  You will probably wonder how you ever got along without it.  Thanks for the comment.

  4. Comfort is the watchword when choosing a pillow. They can be used for various purposes. Wedge pillows, however, are the best. I remembered when I sprained my ankle while running down the stairs about a year ago. I got the necessary treatment but during the recovery process, I found it difficult to sit comfortably as my feet hurt. A friend suggested I try out wedge pillow and after I got one and propped my foot up with it, I felt a lot more relieved.

    1. That is great to hear.  Thank you for reaffirming my beliefs.  You can use it when you don’t have a sprained ankle as well since it is great for circulation and any swelling of the legs.  Thanks for the comment.
