The Weighted Blanket

The weighted blanket is finally here.

You know, when I first heard about this blanket, all I could think about was having my 50 pound dog fall asleep on top of me and the overwhelming desire I had to get him off of me.   This Is something I should have thought about making? Did I lose yet another opportunity for fame and fortune? Let’s just have a look and see what they are all about.

Apparently Occupational Therapists have been using Weighted Blankets for some time for therapy  in their offices. It relieves stress and anxiety. Somehow I can’t get the picture of being at the Dentist’s office and having one of those heavy covers placed on top of me while they take x-rays of my teeth. I never really found that to be a relief for the stress and anxiety I felt at that moment.

Another thing, I have made quilts for years and never once thought about putting a weighted material in between the layers of fabric. Thus, another lost opportunity. Continue reading “The Weighted Blanket”

Leather Throw Pillows

Leather Throw Pillows

Add some class to your decor

I absolutely love my genuine leather pillows. I use them on the leather sofa, as well as on the fabric sofa and  have even thrown them on my bed. I love them because there is nothing better than the smell of real leather. It does something to me. I began sewing and making things since I was just a kid.

More recently I’m using leather to make some of my creations.  I make jewelry, handbags, and doll clothes for 18 inch dolls.  My best seller is the  leather bomber jacket.  See it here.  Leather bomber jacket for 18″ doll.

I will admit, some leather can be very difficult to work with, saddle bag leather for instance. It is not as flexible as the finer garment quality. It is also not as pleasant to put your head on when you lie down.

Soft Garment Leather for pillows

The kind of leather that I am talking about having pillows made out of is the buttery soft kind that you might have a pair of leather pants made out of. Or perhaps a nice skirt. I am talking about the best and softest garment leather there is. Here are a few pictures of some pillows that I made. Since I am an avid quilter, you can see that quilting also has a part in the pillow making process.

With the leather pillows, you can toss them on the floor and lay down with them to watch a movie, or sit on the floor at the coffee table while you play a game. You don’t have to worry so much about destroying the pillow. With leather you can just wipe it off. The only maintenance for the upkeep would be some leather conditioning occasionally, and that is only if you want to.

So, those are some pictures of my pillows. Below you will find some links to Amazon where I have located some great leather pillows. Mostly they come in 14, 16, and 18 inch square covers. Have a look and maybe something will suit you. One brand has a lot of different patterns available in different colors.

A Quillow is a quilt pillow!

A Quillow is for all ages

A Quillow is a quilt pillow!  If you have not heard of a quillow, let me tell you it is quite wonderful. It is simply a quilt that will fold into itself and become a pillow. You can use this pillow anywhere in your home as a throw pillow.

I like to have it on the sofa, so that when I become chilly, I can simply open it up to reveal a quilt.  When it is open it is a nice, warm quilt, that has a pocket for you to put your feet in and keep the quilt in place.

Imagine you are on a trip with kids in the car, each child can have their own “pillow.” When you get to your destination, they open up the pillow and now they will each have their own quilt to pull up over themselves while watching TV, or going to sleep. Of course, if they fall asleep in the car, they can also use it as a blanket.

It is very versatile, and can be made easily. I first heard about Quillows when I was at a fabric store. I was in line behind a woman who was purchasing fabric. The clerk asked her what she was making and she replied “a Quillow” Having made many quilts myself, I had to ask what is a Quillow. I was surprised at the answer, which was “a quilt that folds into itself and becomes a pillow.” I was also surprised that I had never heard of this item before that moment.

I set about making a Quillow of my own

I was intrigued. I had made many quilts in the past, I had even made quilted pillows and  pillow cases to put the quilts in, once folded. Why had I never thought of this, let alone even heard of this before. So, I set about researching Quillows, then set about making some Quillows of my own.

They are so very cool. If you like quilts, and I happen to love quilts. The first Quillow I made I gave to my niece who had a couple of kids. She loved it. I continued to make a few more. I even kept one for myself, which is something I seldom do. Here is a picture of a Quillow that I made. The pillow

itself is 14″ x 14″, while the quilt unfolds to be 48″ by 88″ open.

The pictures show the quillow as a pillow.

Then as you start to unfold the quilt from the pillow it has been inside of.

until finally, the quilt emerges in all of its glory.

Use it as a travel pillow

This pillow could easily be taken with you when you travel.  It should fit very nicely in your suitcase or backpack.  You would use it on the airplane in either capacity.  A pillow to lean against the window, or as a blanket if you get chilly.  It is very functional.  Here are a few quillows available from Amazon.  These are handmade by the Amish and are surely beautiful works of art.

You can actually turn any quilt or blanket into a Quillow very easily. I am working on diy instructions for you to do just that.

It doesn’t take a lot of time or effort, but some sewing is required. You won’t be making a quilt, or anything like that, just the pillow pocket piece that will be attached to the blanket you already have.

Let me know what you think of this idea and whether you would have a use for it. Just leave your comment below. I will respond to each. Thanks.

Make your own Full Body Pillow Cover

Make your own DIY full body pillow cover

You will need:
fabric
scissors
ruler/straight edge
pins
sewing machine or
needle and thread

Fabric that is 60 inches. Now be careful, not all bolts of fabric are that wide. Mostly they will be around 48 inches in width. So, make sure you are looking at the 60 inch width before you fall in love with the pattern. These instructions are for making your pillow cover the same on both sides, You will need at least 44 inches in length of your desired material, so purchase amount will be 1 1/3 yard = 36 inches plus an additional 1/3 of a yard or 12 more inches for a total of 48 inches. May as well give yourself a little wiggle room just in case you have a very full pillow.

You will fold your fabric in half lengthwise with the right sides together. At one end of the fabric you will turn down the edge 1 inch two times. To do this fold the fabric toward the inside (so the right side shows on the inside) 1″ across the edge and iron it down, then fold it another 1″ and press it again. If you are familiar with “stitch witchery” you can use it to fuse the fabric in place. Otherwise, you will sew the edge in place from end to end.  This is the top and open end of your pillow.

With your fabric still inside out, make sure that the fabric you have for your pillow is wide enough. You can wrap the material around the pillow to judge how much extra there is. Holding the sides at the location the pillow fits best, insert your first pin. This is the actual distance from the edge you will be sewing. Since the material is 60 inches, and the standard pillow size is 54 inches, you should  be pinning about 4 or 5 inches from the edge.  Pin along the length and the bottom.

Now you sew

Now you want to sew, starting at the top opening where you have already finished the edge, sew straight down the long side then across the bottom. Now turn your pillow cover right side out and you are finished. Try it on your pillow. If it needs adjusting, stitch it up to perfection. It would not hurt to stitch the seams twice for good measure.

Covers for Full Body Pillows

Full body pillow Covers

More and more people say that they can’t find pillow cases for their full body pillows. The ones that are 54 inches long and 20 inches wide. It is pretty frustrating when you invest in a specialty pillow and then you can’t even buy a new cover for it at the store where you purchased.

I am here to tell you that they do exist, and they come in many colors and prints. If you were feeling particularly creative, you could make your own cover. After all, it is just 1 long piece of fabric folded in half sewn together.

The best neck support pillow

You know how it is, at least if you are like me. You find something you really like and that is it. Well, for me, that would be my Tempur-pedic pillow. It is the best neck support pillow I have ever used.

The take it everywhere pillow

My sister had one of these pillows quite a while ago and when she traveled she made sure to always  save room in her suitcase for her pillow. Personally, I thought she was a little nuts.

When my neck and shoulders started bothering me and the pain was pretty bad just turning my head, I thought I would ask her about her pillow. She let me try it when we were on a trip together. I was still skeptical about this pillow thing but I tried it one night. Honestly, I was so completely surprised. I woke up with no stiff neck, no shoulder pain or head pain. I bought my Tempur-pedic pillow as soon as I returned home. I have not slept without it since.

The Pillow

This pillow has an ergonomic design and it is contoured to follow the natural curve of your body, properly supporting your head, neck, and shoulders, while allowing the neck and shoulder muscles to relax. It is made with firmer TEMPUR® Material.

Find it at Bed Bath and Beyond

You know that pain you have in your neck when you turn your head driving, or look up to see something. My pain would also be in my shoulders and just below my neck. I never thought it was from using the wrong pillow, or even from using too many pillows. But I will tell you, once I used the Tempur-pedic pillow, those days were gone.  In my opinion, this is the best pillow I have found.

I don’t travel without it

I don’t travel without it. I was stuck in Houston at the airport overnight. My boyfriend could not get to sleep. I pulled my pillow out of my carry on (I would never check it and trust the airline to get it to me safe and sound), I laid down on the floor with my pillow and I was fast asleep in minutes.

Needless to say, my boyfriend was quite jealous as he sat in one of those uncomfortable chairs trying to get some sleep for at least 4 hours.

Side or back sleeper

I will say that I am a back sleeper. I always sleep on my back and with this pillow, I don’t move much while sleeping. This pillow supports the neck, the head and shoulders. I used to wake up with headaches, stiff necks, and sore shoulders. No more. I wake up feeling the way I used to. No aches, no pains and I owe it all to my Tempur-pedic pillow. It truly is a miracle worker.

Sometimes I prop myself up in bed, or just lie down on the bed with all my decorative pillows still on it. If I happen to fall asleep like this, sure enough my neck hurts when I wake up. It happens every time and I can’t believe I still do this to myself. Of course, I get up, remove all the pillows except one, of course. By morning, my neck is fine.

That’s It

I have tried other pillows, even other Tempur-pedic pillows but I don’t get the same support for neck and shoulders. I just feel my spine align correctly starting at my head and going down to my feet when I sleep on the Tempur-pedic pillow.

Review-InteVision Ortho Bed Wedge Pillow

Product:  InteVision Ortho Bed Wedge Pillow – A Review
Price: $39.99
Cheapest Place to Buy: Amazon
Measurements: 24″ x 21″ x 8″
Guarantee: 30 money back guarantee
My Rating:  4.5 out of 5
Some of the Best Features:

  • PREMIUM MEMORY FOAM. Each memory foam pillow features a double-layer design:  It is made of memory foam layer on top of a firm base foam for better comfort.  Although it is more expensive to manufacture such a product, it does give the benefits of letting you experience a more comfortable, soft feel of the cushion while the firm base foam provides the support you need.  The size of this leg elevator is 8 x 21 x 24 inches.
  • GUARANTEE.  If you are not completely satisfied with this product you can return it for a full refund within 30 days.
  • REMOVABLE AND WASHABLE COVER. This pillow comes with a 100% Egyptian cotton cover that feels silky-smooth and can be removed for easy cleaning.
(Additional pillowcases are sold separately and are available on Amazon)

Of course, there are more and less expensive wedge pillows out there. The reason I like this one is that it is soft enough and still gives my legs firm support without being too hard. And because of the memory foam, it shapes to my legs. The 8″ elevation is perfect.   If you are very tall, you might try elevating your legs by propping something under them just to get a comfortable measurement of height for your knees

If you have had or will be having surgery i.e. leg, foot, ankle, this pillow will be just what the doctor orders.  People have stated that after they had surgery, this pillow was just perfect to keep weight off the leg or foot, and they would not have had such good results without it.

This pillow delivers on all the promises it makes. If you need to reduce the swelling in your feet and legs, It does it superbly. If you want to relieve lower back pain, hip pain or sciatica, You will feel the relief. It is not a cure, keep in mind, but after a good night sleep with one of these pillows relief will be yours. It is a good idea to use regularly so you receive all the benefits of this pillow.

All in all, you can’t go wrong with this pillow. I recommend it very highly and I promise you will not be disappointed. Because it is memory foam, it is necessary to allow the pillow to completely expand to its full size before using it.
I hope you enjoyed this review.  If you have any questions or if you would like to leave a comment or your own personal review, please do so below.

Pillows to elevate your feet

How to improve circulation in legs and feet

Use a Wedge pillow to elevate feet and legs

By elevating your legs with a wedge pillow, you can improve circulation in legs and feet. It can help relieve swollen feet and ankles, lower back pain, knee pain, sciatica, and more. Anyone no matter your age or heath condition, can use this technique for relief, unless discouraged by your doctor, of course.  The medical wedge pillows for legs may relieve discomfort and pressure in the knees, hips and lower back. Elevation pillows also promote increased circulation to relieve swollen, aching and tired feet.

A simple solution

It is such a simple technique and it can be very tempting to just throw your legs up on the back of a couch, which I have done many times. I have also tried stacking pillows at the foot of my bed. They stayed that way for about 2 minutes. Any method other than using a wedge pillow  to elevate feet and legs properly above your heart will really not be of much value, and actually can cause pressure on other parts of your legs, and that would defeat the elevation purpose. I have learned from years of experience the right way  and yes, the wrong.

The proper solution

You need a foam wedge pillow that will fit the shape of the leg and that has been designed for the purpose of correctly elevating your legs to the proper height, without putting pressure on any other part of the body.

What needs to be accomplished here is elevating your legs above the heart, while your feet and calves are above your hips. This allows fluids to drain. Note: Feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem and you should see your physician.

This  first  wedge  pillow  is  actually  my  number  One  choice.  It  is  made  with Memory  Foam  and  also  comes  with  a washable  cover.

What you don’t want to do

You should not elevate the legs by keeping the legs totally straight and up in the air.  Putting your feet against the wall is one way of doing this. This can cause a lot of stress and strain on the muscles and tendons of the knees causing you more pain. Besides, bending the knees slightly is more comfortable.

You should always make sure that your spine is straight. You don’t want to twist your upper body in any way. Lying flat or with a regular pillow under your head is perfect. You also have to make sure that you lie down somewhere that will allow you to extend your entire body while using the wedge pillow for elevating your legs.

If you sprain your ankle

To treat a sprained ankle, or any other injury that causes instant swelling, you will want to apply ice, some compression and then elevate the injured foot and leg. Using a wedge pillow designed for this is the best way to go.

Make it a routine

You should make elevating your legs a part of your everyday routine, say each evening, especially if you have chronic circulation problems  This long term habit can come to do you some long term good. If you suffer from feet and ankle swelling, try lying down twice a day with your legs elevated using your wedge pillow.  Relax and enjoy the time alone.  Below is the Xtra-Comfort Leg Elevation Pillow.    This wedge pillow is my second choice.  It is  also memory  foam and has a removable cover that is washable.  Click the image to buy or to see online.

Conclusion

No matter what the cause of pain in legs and feet, or whatever your particular issue is, if you think that elevating your legs can help, then I can help you find the right pillow. If this is something you have been doing for a while with regular pillows or some other method you devised, perhaps it is time to use a trusted product designed to help you get relief.   Either pillow shown above are excellent choices.

Deciding the color palette and designs

Keep in mind that we may receive commissions when you click Amazon, our affiliate links and make purchases.  The price is not affected.  See our disclosure page.

Deciding the color palette and designs

When deciding on the color palette and designs for your pillows you would like, try using decorative pillow sets to make selection easier.  Determine how many  decorative pillows or pillow covers you would like to have, take a look around your room for something that you can base your color palette on. If there is no wall art or wall hangings to get inspiration from, consider looking at some pictures of wall art on line or in magazines and be inspired by them.

Look around your house for colorful items or photos that you like.  Even your favorite clothes could inspire you. You may already know what colors you would like to see in your space because your favorite restaurant uses them in their decor. This decision is all yours.

Once you have your colors chosen, I would suggest using one solid color, one vibrant print, and one geometric design for the pillows. You can have more than 1 pillow with each of the covers. For instance, you would place one solid, large pillow on each end of the sofa, with one smaller geometric and vibrant pattern in the middle. Your colors should complement each other and add interest and design to the room.  Here are some examples of pillow sets.  Keep in mind, these are covers only.  You will need the pillow form too.

This is extremely helpful when you are having a hard time with all the different choices that are available. Don’t forget the decorative pillow inserts

Remember, for each pillow cover you will need a pillow insert, or form.

What comes first, the cover or the pillow insert?

In some cases, you will already have an existing pillow that you need a cover for. In the event that you don’t, or you would really just like to replace what you have. There are many products to choose from depending on your preferences.

The material the Decorative pillow Inserts are made of can be hypoallergenic polyester; a down alternative super soft microfiber; actual goose down; or an outdoor water and mold resistant hypoallergenic stuffing material. I’m sure there are more to choose from, but these are the ones I would suggest using.

My favorite are the Foamily Set of 4-18 x 18 Premium Hypoallergenic Stuffer Pillow Inserts.  They are made from Virgin polyester fibers, these pillows will not only resist Dust Mite, Mildew and mold, they won’t stir up any allergies for your loved ones or guests.  They are made in the USA and are washable.  They can be purchased individually or in sets of 2, 3, or 4.

Choose sizes for the Decorative pillow inserts

There are quite a few standard sizes of pillow inserts that the decorative pillow covers are made to fit. Square sizes are:

  • 16″ x 16″
  • 18″ x 18″
  • 20″ x 20″
  • 22″ x 22″
  • 30″ x 30″

Lumbar sizes:

  • 12″ x 18″
  • 12″ x 20″
  • 14″ x 20″
  • 14″ x 24″

The above lumbar pillows are another favorite.  They are also the Foamily brand.  They are made from Virgin polyester fibers, these pillows will not only resist Dust Mite, mildew and mold, they won’t stir up any allergies for your loved ones or guests.  They are made in the USA and are washable.   The set of two are $17.99.

Now all you need to do is decide how many of each size pillow covers you will need.  So the answer to the question what comes first, the insert or the cover is still unknown.  I’m pretty sure that I would want to select my covers first – Then stuff each and every one of them with a new decorative pillow insert.

It is still up to you

You will be the one determining if old pillows can be recovered or not.  You will choose what size you will need for the sofa, bed or floor.  You will be selecting the perfect color combinations to enhance your home decor.  I am here to answer questions and offer suggestions to make the process a little easier.

My Decorative Christmas Pillows Story

It was a day just like every other day but different…

Throw pillows and Christmas stuff everywhere

We were all getting the Christmas decorations, ornaments, lights, wreaths, Santas and snowmen from the attic to start the annual ritual of decorating for the holidays.  The outside lights would be strung by someone other than myself.  I preferred to perform my tasks while indoors where I would be nice and warm.

Most of the decorations and wrapping papers were strewn about on the sofa.  I glanced in that direction and for a brief moment in my peripheral vision, I saw an assortment of what looked like decorative pillows on the sofa where the Christmas decorations were.

Then just as suddenly the reality of what was really on the sofa  came back into focus.  I was just a kid, barely 13 but I knew what I had seen.  I thought that my sofa looked so festive and fun.  So much so that  I set about finding anything I could that looked to me like Christmas. It also had to be something I could make a pillow out of, like the ones I had seen in my ‘vision’.

I had started sewing at a young age, and lucky for me my mother was a very good seamstress.  She had bunches of fabric from projects she had completed and some not yet started.  I rummaged through her boxes and bags and surfaced with about 4 fabrics that I believed would make lovely decorative Christmas pillows for our living room sofa.  I set about creating my family’s new Christmas theme Throw Pillows.  I was barely missed during the decorating festivities.

4 New Christmas themed throw pillows

I had so much fun, even thought I did not know exactly what I was doing.  Okay, how hard can it be, Right.  I had before me a green and red plaid silk fabric that looked very elegant.  There was only a small sample, so that would be a very small pillow.  I had some red flannel that surely was somebody’s pajamas.

Apples and holly seemed to have a festive feel.  Then I  found a green fabric that appeared to have sparkling diamonds all over.  That pillow was my favorite.  I attached a green sequin Christmas tree on the front just for fun.  I was very proud of my masterpieces.  Everyone loved the way they transformed the entire living room and made it just a little bit magical.

Some things find their way back into your life

I must say, I did not think about decorative pillows for a long time after that, but I suppose that Christmas was just pushed to the back of my mind.  I am not sure why, but lately I have been thinking that everyone should have the magic of their own great decorative Christmas pillows to celebrate the holidays at home.  You can see my first 4 pillows here.  Okay but remember I was only 13 when I made them, and no they are not for sale!

Breathe new life into your space by adding some Decorative Accent Pillows.

You look around at the pillows you have had in the family room on the sofa, on the floor and on the chairs. You actually like the size and shapes of the pillows, if only they weren’t so worn.

Instead of throwing them out, you can easily find  pillow covers that will fit right over the old pillows. If they happen to be a zippered throw pillow, then you would remove the old cover before putting on the new one. Otherwise, you can just place the new  pillow cover over the old one for a fresh, new look.  Set of 2 pillow covers, 18″ x 18.”  Available in different colors and in sizes  16″ x 16″, 20″ x 20″  Click to view online and to purchase.

You also have the option of starting fresh and buying all new pillows, including the forms, for your family room. Just make sure that when you are shopping for them, that the price is for the complete pillow.  If you buy only the cover, you will need to purchase the pillow inserts as well.

The first picture  is a set of four pillow covers that  I think  are  great.   They  come  in  19  different coordinating  colors. They are also available in different sizes.

The second picture is a set of 2 pillow covers, plain and pattern.  The third picture is a set of two velvet pillow covers.  Shown are 22″ and they come in 28 solid colors.  They are all available at Amazon.  Click on the pictures  below for more information or to buy.

You need to decide the number of pillows  ideal for your space.

Determine if the pillows you have scattered about have been fully functional, or if occasionally you have come up 1 or 2 pillows short on movie night. Make a mental note or write down  which pillows to keep and their sizes.  Then determine how many additional  pillows you will need.

Set of 4,  throw pillow covers.  3  are 100% cotton 1 is faux leather. Available from Amazon.  Click on picture.

Starting from scratch?

It is relatively easy to decide how many pillows you will need. Basically, it will depend on how you use the family room. If you have a sofa, then you want at least 3 good sized decorative pillows on it. More if it is an oversize sofa. Each chair should have one or two accent pillows. If the kids like to sit on pillows on the floor, then one large pillow for each child should do nicely.  Get some ideas of  coordinating pillows sets selected for you.

Boho Throw pillows, 18″ x 18″  set of 6.  Trendy designs.  Covers Only.  From Amazon.

Selecting the size and shapes of your pillows may take a bit of decision-making.

A typical decorative pillow for a couch is  22″ or 24″ This size pillow would be placed at each end of the sofa. You would also add one or two smaller accent pillows 18″ or 20″ toward the center of the sofa. Keep in mind, you want to leave enough space to sit comfortably on the couch with the pillows.

You may or may not want or need an additional pillow on your chairs, depending on how comfortable the chair is. If you want to add a bolster or lumbar pillow or one that is smaller than those for the sofa, you certainly can do so.  Floor pillows are another option to consider.

If you have any questions, please leave a message in the comments below, I would love to hear from you.
